Play on STRENGTHS

I don’t believe in bringing a 2 to a 4 on a scale of 10. Focus on strengths, and when you cannot, fail forward fast. When forming a team we should be honest what contribution expectations make sense. For those who are new - try a quick outline or rough sketch. Don’t waste time figuring out what you ‘think’ the team wants. Find out as soon as possible if you are on the right path.

Assume there will be accountability in front of the team. This drives the best in all of us. No one wants to fail in public. A supportive team that moves the smallest of road blocks is the foundation of team work, trust, and mutual respect.

Building others

I have always believed that in the absence of information - fear will grow. So why not share your plans with the team?

Often times its because it may not be perfect. Get over it. Manufacturing doesn’t have time for that. Future plants (whether its 3 months or 16 months in the future) should be shared with the team. Low to Mid leadership should have an avenue where they feel they have a seat at the table. After all, we rely on them for daily execution, what better way to develop them further. Their questions will lead to offering them challenges to grow. Additionally, their insights remove your blind spots.

Developing yourself

I read certain books every two years, even if its just a chapter. Its a real jolt of what you may have stopped putting a priority on, or refreshing reminder that it is still relevant.

I’ve found that my life conditions change all of the time. I’m not saying that constant reading is necessary but I believe the people you associate with and the books you read define you.
